Windows 7 - Connect to MIT SECURE wireless - Instructions for Lenovo laptops

These instructions are valid for users with Lenovo laptops

The instructions apply only to users running the Thinkvantage Access Connections software. Please follow the instructions here if you do not have the Thinkvantage software: Windows 7 - How to connect to MIT SECURE wireless

The Lenovo ThinkVantage software is configured differently than the regular Windows wireless networking service. The instructions below have been tested for the MIT SECURE network. Please follow each step carefully.

Use the Windows wireless configuration utility:

If you want to use the Windows network service rather than the Access Connections software, you can do so by

  1. Remove all Location profiles from the ThinkVantage Access Connections software
    • You will have to disconnect from your active connection in order to remove it
  2. Follow the instructions to configure Windows 7 for use with the MIT SECURE network: Windows 7 - How to connect to MIT SECURE wireless

Use the ThinkVantage Access Connection software:

  1. Open the ThinkVantage Access Connections Software
    ThinkVantage Access Connection software window open.
  2. Click the Location Profiles tab
    If you see Switch to: Advanced in the upper right, click that button
    If you see Switch to: Basic in the upper right, do not click
    Location Profiles tab opened.
  3. The window should look like the one below.
    If you have any profiles called MIT SECURE, remove them.
    Click Create to create a new Network Profile
    Location Profiles tab open having clicked Create button.
  4. Name the profile MIT SECURE
    Connection Type should be Best Available or Wireless LAN
       - If you choose Wireless LAN, this profile will not work with ethernet
    Click Next
    Create new profile window open with details filled in.

  5. Fill in the following:


    Network name (SSID): MIT SECURE
    Connection type: Infrastructure
    Wireless security: Use 802.1x or other security


  6. Click Properties under Wireless security type
    Wireless Settings with details filled in.
    The following values should be selected:

    Security type: WPA2-Enterprise
    Encryption type: AES
    Choose a network authentication method: Microsoft: Protected EAP


  7. Click Settings next to Microsoft: Protected EAP (PEAP)
    Wireless Network Properties window open.
  8. Under Trusted Root Certification Authorities, check the box for
    GeoTrust Global CA

    Select Authentication Method should be:
    Secure Password (EAP-MSCHAP v2)

    Click Configure
    Protected EAP Properties window open.
  9. Uncheck Automatically use my Windows logon ... and click OK
    EAP MSCHAPv2 Properties window open.
  10. Click OK on the Protected EAP Properties page to return to the wireless settings page
    Click Settings under Advanced configuration
    | Back at the Wireless Settings window.
  11. Select Maximum Performance for the Power save mode
    This setting can provide more reliable wireless connections, but will reduce battery life
  12. Click OK
    Advanced Wireless Settings window open.
  13. Click Next to see the Additional Settings page and click Finish
    Additional Settings window open.
    You should receive a message asking you to Apply this profile.  Click Yes
    Confirming profile application.
    You will see a message at the bottom of the screen asking for additional information
  14. Click on the message (do not click the X in the upper right hand corner).

    You will be prompted to Authenticate
  15. Enter your MIT kerberos username and password
    Authentication window.
    You can confirm that you are connected to the MIT SECURE network by
    hovering your mouse over the Access Connections icon in the panel
    Toolbar bubble confirmation of connection.
