Windows 10 Feature Updates

Starting with Windows 10, Microsoft has fundamentally altered the model of new OS releases. Instead of waiting for major version releases every several years to incorporate new features, Microsoft is releasing new versions of Windows 10 several times a year. These feature updates are independent of security updates that are releases every month.

Starting on January 11th, 2017, MIT will be making these Windows feature updates available from Windows Update for those machines pointing to MIT's WSUS (Windows Server Update Services). For standalone machines, you can opt your computers into MIT's WSUS by importing the reg file found in this KB article. Domain machines will automatically use the MIT Windows update server.

Computers receiving the Windows feature updates from MIT will only receive up to the Current Branch for Business version, essentially the version recommended for enterprise use. Typically, this is the version one back from the most current release. More on the new Windows servicing model can be found here.

Note About Receiving Windows 10 v1607 via Windows Update

We have found a bug that may prevent your Windows 10 client from getting the most current Windows 10 feature update. We have observed and reported to Microsoft that after upgrading from Windows 10 v1507 to v1511, that sometimes Windows Update can get set to "Defer upgrades". If you have a GPO set to defer upgrades, then the GUI in Windows 10 may show that defer upgrades is disabled when it if in fact not disabled. The GPO will have no affect on this setting on the client machine. You will want to disable the "Defer upgrades" by setting the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsUpdate\UX\Settings:  DWORD: DeferUpgrade = 0
