VMware Fusion - Steps to take before deleting a Virtual Machine

One: Verify that all data has been stored on the host machine.

Before deleting a Virtual Machine, verify that no data has been stored in the Virtual Machine. After the Virtual Machine has been deleted, there will be no way to recover any of its data.

  • IS&T recommends that all data be stored in shared or mirrored folders on the host machine.
  • Before deleting the VM, verify that you can find and access the data from your host machine.

Note: Users are responsible for ensuring that a.) no data was stored in the Virtual Machine, or b.) any data stored in the Virtual Machine has been copied to the host machine. If you have any questions, please contact the IS&T Help Desk, at helpdesk@mit.edu or x3-1101.

Two: Verify that you will be able to reinstall any applications

  • IS&T recommends against customizing the Virtual Machine environment, since standard troubleshooting practice is to download a new copy of the Virtual Machine.
  • If you have installed any application in the Virtual Machine, verify that you have the installation media to reinstall the application in another VM, or on another computer.
