Upgrade to Windows 10

These instructions are for upgrading a current machine to Windows 10. You will have the opportunity during the process to direct the installer to save your current data, programs and settings. As a precaution, you may also wish to back up your data before upgrading.

It is recommended that you check to see if your machine's hardware is compatible and eligible for an upgrade. Compatibility and upgrade known issues can be found in the Microsoft Windows 10 Upgrade FAQ.


Download the Windows 10 Install File

  1. Visit the IS&T Software Grid and locate Windows 10. Then click Proceed to licensing.

  2. Read the page, then click proceed to license agreement
  3. Read the page, then click I agree to and accept the terms above

  4. Click to download Windows 10 Enterprise DVD image 32-bit or, 64-bit (ISO format)

Upgrade to Windows 10

Note: you can run the Windows 10 install file from the current hard drive or you can copy it to a DVD or flash drive to upgrade multiple machines.

  1. Open the folder containing the install file (Downloads or other folder, on a DVD or flash drive) and double-click the file named windows10-enterprise-x64(orx32).
  2. Double-click the file named setup.

  3. The User Access Control (UAC) window may appear. Choose to allow program to makes changes to this computer.

  4. From the Get Important Updates screen, choose to Download and install updates (recommended) and then click Next.

  5. At the License terms screen click Accept.

  6. At the Choose what to keep screen, click Keep Windows Settings, personal files, and apps. Then click Next. The Windows 10 setup will check to make sure that your computer is ready to install.

  7. At the Ready to install screen, you will see a summary of the options you've chosen. If this is correct, click the Install button.

  8. Windows 10 installation will now proceed. Your computer may restart several times during the install.

    The Windows 10 installation creates a new folder named named Windows.old which contains your programs and data files. This folder is located in the

    Local Disk (C:) folder.



  9. Move your files from the Windows.old folder to an appropriate location on your hard drive.

  10. When you are confident that you no longer need any files located in the Window.old folder you may remove it by following the instructions in the article How do I remove the Windows.old folder?.
    Before you use Disk Cleanup, make sure that all of your files and settings are where you expect them to be. Deleting the Windows.old folder can’t be undone.
