Upgrade Windows 8 to Windows 8.1

It is recommended to run the Windows 8.1 Upgrade Assistant before attempting to upgrade to Windows 8.1. A link to the upgrade assistant can be found in the Windows 8.1 Upgrade FAQ found here:

  1. Insert the media into the computer you plan to upgrade.
  2. Run the Windows 8.1 setup from the installation media.
  3. UAC may appear. Choose to allow program to makes changes to this computer.
  4. From the Get Important Updates screen, choose to Download and install updates (recommended) and then click Next.
  5. At the license terms screen click I accept the license term and then click next.
  6. At the Choose what to keep screen, click Keep Windows Settings, personal files, and apps. Then click Next.
  7. The Windows 8.1 setup will check to make sure that your computer is ready to install.
  8. At the Ready to install screen, you will see a summary of the options you've chosen. If this is correct, then click the Install button.
  9. Windows 8.1 installation will now proceed. Your computer may restart several times during the install.
  10. After Windows 8.1 is installed on your computer you will notice that your hard drive now contains an additional Windows folder named Windows.old. This contains files from your old Windows 8 installation. When you are confident that you no longer need any files located in this folder you may remove it by following the instructions here.
