Messages stuck in the Outbox in Outlook
Messages may become stuck in the Outbox in Outlook. Any new messages that the user tries to send then get stuck as well. Follow these steps to clear the Outbox.
- Exit Outlook, and wait for it to fully close.
- Re-open Outlook, and sign in to your email.
- Wait about a minute for Outlook to finish starting up, then press the Send/Receive button.
Most of the time, the above steps take care of the issue and Outlook will send out the stuck messages. If messages are still stuck, you can try additional steps:
- Navigate to the Outbox, to view all messages that are currently there.
- Highlight all messages in the Outbox, and follow the menu path Edit >> Move to folder >> Drafts, to move the messages out of the Outbox into the Drafts folder.
Note: If the messages do not move, you may need to restart Outlook and/or reboot the computer. After restarting Outlook, when you are prompted to enter your password for the outgoing mail server, do not enter the password, and press Cancel.
- Once the Outbox is empty, close Outlook. In some cases, you may also need to reboot the computer.
- With an empty Outbox, create a new, simple message, and try sending it.
