Internet Explorer 8 for Windows - Known Issues

On this page:

Using IE8 with MIT Websites on Windows XP, Vista and 7

Internet Explorer 8 introduces a security behavior which warns users when connecting to websites using an HTTPS connection. Examples of websites affected by this behavior are the ECAT sites, which include GovConnection and Dell.

The warning message given by IE8 is:

Do you want to view only the webpage content that was delivered securely? This webpage contains content that will not be delivered using a secure HTTPS connection, which could compromise the security of the entire webpage.

The default selection is YES. If a website is not IE8 compatible selecting "YES" will affect functionality of the page and might make it unusable.

If you trust the website you are attempting to access, but it is not IE8 compatible, selecting NO might solve functionality issues with the site.

Alternatively, if you encounter further problems with secure websites in IE8, install and use Firefox instead.

Getting MIT Certificates on Windows XP

The first time you try to get a new MIT personal certificate in IE8 on Windows XP, you may get the message: "Your browser failed to properly generate a key." This is a security-related action called Certificate Enrollment Control, which did not occur in previous versions of IE.

To fix this problem, direct your attention to the yellow information bar at the top of the web page:

  1. Click inside the yellow bar.
Result: A small pop-up menu will appear.
  2. In the menu, click Run ActiveX Control.
  3. Click Run in the Security Warning dialog box.
Result: You will return to the Get an MIT Certificate web page.
  4. Re-enter your information and click Submit.
Result: This should generate a new personal certificate.
