Install the Pharos printing client on Ubuntu

The easiest way to install the Pharos printing client is to install Debathena on your Ubuntu distribution (see How do I install Debathena on my personal computer?). If you do not wish to install Debathena, the following steps will guide you to install the client on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, although the instructions should readily translate to other distributions on Linux.

On this page:

Installing required repositories and packages

  1. Configure the required Debathena repositories. Follow Steps 1 to 4 of How do I install Debathena manually?.
  2. Install the required packages. Execute on the command line as root:
aptitude update && aptitude install debathena-pharos-support

Black & white printing

  1. Select Printers from the System Settings menu and click the Add button in the new window.
  2. Select Enter URL from the list and enter the following device URL:
    pharos://bw/joeuser

Note: Replace joeuser with your MIT Kerberos username. Do not append @MIT.EDU to your username.

  3. Click on the Forward button. The operating system will attempt to find the correct driver.
  4. In the new window, click on the Select printer from database radio button under Choose Driver, then scroll down and select HP. Then click the Forward button.
  5. You will be prompted to select a model. Select LaserJet 9050. Then, on the right hand side of the window, choose HP LaserJet 9050 hpijs pcl3.
  6. You will then be prompted to name the printer and add a description. You can pick any name you want, but we recommend mitprint, which will match the configuration of the Athena cluster machines.

Color printing

  1. Select Printers from the System Settings menu and click the Add button in the new window.
  2. Select Enter URL from the list and enter the following device URL:
    pharos://color/joeuser

Note: Replace joeuser with your MIT Kerberos username. Do not append @MIT.EDU to your username.

  3. Click on the Forward button. The operating system will attempt to find the correct driver.
  4. In the new window, click on the Select printer from database radio button under Choose Driver, then scroll down and select HP. Then click the Forward button.
  5. You will be prompted to select a model. Select Color LaserJet cp3525dn. Then, on the right hand side of the window, choose HP Color LaserJet 9050 hpijs pcl3.
  6. You will then be prompted to name the printer and add a description. You can pick any name you want, but we recommend mitprint-color, which will match the configuration of the Athena cluster machines.

In the "color printing" section, that should probably say "mitprint-color". Relatedly, the "for color printing support" line should probably die.

For those using Ubuntu on a private computer who didn't know how to configure the repositories

    http://debathena.mit.edu/advanced-installation

Also, in 12.04 that for step 3 choose Network Printer and then MIT Pharos Printer
