Install or upgrade to Office 2016 for Windows

Before you begin

Be aware that the process can take 20 minutes or more. You may be required to restart your computer when done.
Before you start the installation, do the following preparatory steps:


  1. Ensure that your operating system has the DNS suffix. [Learn how].
  2. If you are off campus, connect to the MIT VPN. See Prisma Access VPN Landing Page.


  1. Download the Office installer,, from the download site
  2. Unzip the contents of the file into a separate folder.
    1. To unzip: right-click the downloaded zip file and choose "Extract All..."

  3. Inside the unzipped Microsoft_Office_Professional_Plus_Edition_2016_32bit folder, find setup.exe.

Install Microsoft Office 2016

  1. Launch the setup.exe file.
  2. If a dialog box appears asking Do you want to allow the following program to make changes to this computer?, click Yes.

  3. On the Choose the Installation you want screen, press Upgrade or Install Now (for a new installation).

    1. You can choose Customize if you want to customize which features (Word, Outlook, etc) are installed. For more information see the List of Default Features installed by Office 2016 for Windows Installer.

  4. Have patience. Installing or upgrading can take 15 minutes or more, depending on your computer.
  5. When the installation is done, the Complete your Office experience window will appear.

  6. Click Close.
    Result: A Setup window may require you to restart your computer.

  7. Click Yes to reboot.

Additional notes

Office is now installed. You may see the following:

  1. Your start menu should have a new folder with the new programs inside.
  2. If you upgraded from Office 2013, you may still have a folder named Microsoft Office 2013, with some old Office 2013 programs in it. The Office 2016 programs will be directly under All Programs.
