Install or Upgrade to Microsoft Office 2010

Before you begin

Before you start the installation, do the following preparatory steps:

  1. Ensure that your operating system has the correct domain suffix (DNS). Learn how.
  2. If you are off campus, connect to the MIT VPN, by installing the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client for your OS.
  3. Download the appropriate Microsoft Office installer.
  4. Unzip the contents of the file into a separate folder.
    1. To unzip: right-click the downloaded zip file and choose "Extract All...
    2. Highlight the downloaded zip file, then at the top of the window, you will see the Extract All button. Click the extract all button to extract the files.
  5. Choose a location to extract the files to and leave the box checked for "Show extracted files when complete"
  6. Choose Extract
  7. Locate the setup-MIT.cmd file amongst the files in the unzipped folder.

Note: The upgrade could take up to 20 minutes to complete.

Install Microsoft Office 2010 or Upgrade from Office 2003/2007

Note: The following screenshots were captured on a PC running the Windows XP operating system.

  1. Launch the setup-MIT.cmd file.
    Result: The installation of Office 2010 will start automatically.
  2. If a dialog box appears asking Do you want to allow the following program to make changes to this computer?, click Yes.
  3. On the Read the Microsoft Software License Terms screen, select I accept the terms of this agreement and then click Continue.
  4. On the Choose the Installation you want screen, click Upgrade or Install Now (for a new installation).
  5. The Installation Progress screen will display the progress of the installation. The process can take 15-20 minutes. Do not close the Installation Progress window before it has completed; it will close on its own.
  6. Once the installation is done, the Complete your Office experience screen will display.
  7. Click Close.
    Result: A Setup dialog box will alert you that a system reboot is necessary to complete the setup process.
  8. Click Yes to reboot your system.
  9. The first time you open one of your new 2010 applications, a Welcome screen will prompt you to select how you want to get updates for Office. Select the default Use Recommended Settings and allow the program to update your computer.
  10. To validate that your Office 2010 license has successfully activated, follow the steps in this article.
