Install MIT CA (Certificate Authority) in Safari on Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.6

This article will guide you through the steps of installing the MIT CA (Certificate Authority) on Safari on Mac OS X 10.5. The MIT Certificate Authority is used to verify MIT websites.

The MIT CA is one of two certificates required for using certain websites at MIT. To install a personal certificate, see the following article: Install and Renew Certificates in Safari on Mac OS 10.5, 10.6 and 10.7

Instructions

  1. If you are viewing this page with Safari, click on the following link to download the certificate: MIT CA
    Alternatively, paste the following URL into Safari: http://ca.mit.edu/mitca.crt.
    Result: This downloads the file "mitca.crt" to Safari's default Downloads folder in the your home directory (unless you specified another default location).
  2. Navigate in the Finder to userhome > Downloads.
  3. Double-click mitca.crt to open.

  4. Keychain Access opens and prompts for where to store the certificate. Select the System keychain and press OK

  5. Enter your Mac OS X login password and click OK. You must have administrator privileges on the computer.

    If you are not an administrator on the computer, you will receive the following message. You will need a user who is an administrator on the computer to install the CA.

  6. You will be prompted to set the trust settings for the certificate. Click Always Trust.

  7. Enter the Mac OS X login password.

    Result: The MIT CA is added to the Keychain.

Verify that the MIT Certificate Authority is properly installed.

  1. Navigate in the Finder to Applications > Utilities.
  2. Double-click Keychain Access to launch the application.
  3. Select the System keychain in the top list on the column to the left of the window, and then select Certificates in the bottom list on the column to the left of the window.
    Result: Your Keychain Access window should display "MIT Certification Authority" and have a blue circle with a white plus-sign.

    If you see more MIT Certificate Authority listed more than once, delete the duplicate(s).
