How do I configure Messages, iMessages or iChat on the Mac to connect to MIT's Cisco Jabber service

Steps

  1. Navigate to the Apple Menu in the upper left of the screen and select System Preferences.

  2. Under the heading Internet & Wireless select Mail, Contacts & Calendars. In 10.10, this icon has been renamed Accounts.

  1. In the right-hand column, scroll down and select Add Other Account.

  2. Select Add a Messages Account from the subsequent list and click Create.

  3. On the "Add a Messages Account" screen, use the following values:
  • Specify Account Type: Jabber
  • Account Name: yourname@mit.edu
  • Password: Your Password
  • Server: jabber.mit.edu
  • Select the check-box labeled: Use SSL

  1. Click Create.
  2. Open Messages and set your status to Available.
  3. When prompted with a Verify Certificate screen, select Show Certificate.

  4. Select the checkbox next to Always trust "mit.edu" when connecting to "jabber.mit.edu" and then select Continue.

  5. When prompted, enter your Mac username and password and select Update Settings.

  6. Messages is now configured to use MIT's Jabber service.
