Get Connected to MITnet - Connecting Mac OS X 10.6 to 10.9

Connect Via Ethernet and a Static IP Address

  1. If you do not already have an IP address, obtain one from IS&T
  2. Connect your computer to your assigned network drop using an Ethernet cable.
  3. Open System Preferences, either from the Dock or the Apple menu > System Preferences....

  4. When the System Preferences window appears, click on the Network icon.

Result: The Network configuration window appears, displaying the status of the active ports.

Note: If the lock in the lower-left corner of the window is closed, you must click it and enter your Mac OS X administrator password before you can make changes to settings.

  1. In the left-hand pane, choose Ethernet.
  2. Set the Location drop-down menu (at the top of the window) to Automatic and the Configure menu to Manually.

  3. Enter the network settings as shown below:
    • IP Address: your IP address, in the form 18.x.y.z
    • Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
    • Router: the IP address of the router in your subnet, in the form of 18.x.0.1, where x is the same as x in your IP address
  4. Select the Advanced button and the DNS tab. Enter the following DNS settings:
    • DNS Servers:
      • 18.71.0.151
      • 18.70.0.160
      • 18.72.0.3
    • Search Domains:
      • mit.edu
  5. The DNS settings should look like the following.

  6. Click OK.
  7. Click Apply.
    Result: The completed window will look similar to the following.

Connect Via Ethernet and DHCP

  1. Follow steps 1 through 4 above.
  2. Set the Location drop-down menu (at the top of the window) to Automatic and the Configure menu to Using DHCP.
  3. Click Apply.
    Result: The IP Address and other network settings will be filled in automatically.
