Ending in the fall, 2015, IS&T updated the fiber connection to your house and redesigned the wireless network. As you may be aware, the wireless network now matches the MIT wireless network setup and users can connect to the main networks: MIT SECURE and MIT GUEST. The wired (ethernet) network in your house is still owned, maintained and configured by you and your house. The ethernet drops in the rooms and the internal switches (currently Netgear branded equipment) are maintained by your network contact or other internally designated party. With the change in network setup, IS&T needs to reassign the subnet associated with your house.
The network segments for all MIT Fraternities, Sororities and Independent Living groups have changed. Previously, FSILGs had a /16 subnet on MITnet 18 (18.<subnet>.0.0/16). As of January 2015, all houses instead have a /24 subnet (18.102.<subnet>.0/24).
All IP addresses on the old network subnet are currently routable, however, IS&T will need to reclaim those subnets for use elsewhere on campus. Any static IP address and hostname in an MIT FSILG will need to be issued a new IP address.
IS&T is reaching out to the owners of static IP addresses as well as house network contacts and house officers to assist with creating and setting up new IP address for their active hosts.
March 2015 - April 2015: IS&T is contacting owners of machines with active static IP addresses to re-issue IP addresses
March - May 2015: IS&T will stop routing the old IP address ranges in houses after all current static IP addresses have been reassigned in each house.
Houses were each assigned class B networks with over sixty-five thousand IP addresses, however, less than five hundred of them were routable and fewer than fifty were ever used in any house at any given time. In Fall 2014, the wireless networks for each house were removed from the FSILG network IP range and put on the main MIT wireless network IP ranges. Only network devices connected to an ethernet port will require an IP address on the FSILG home network. This means that a class C with a maximum of 254 addresses far out numbers the available network ports in any building and will be more than enough for address assignments.
The forty class B subnets that were in use by the FSILGs will be repurposed for use elsewhere on MIT's network.
Once the new static IP address has been created, client machines and equipment will probably need to be reconfigured to use the new address with the settings included here.

Computers that use a static IP address may need to do so because they are setup as web or file servers.
How do I configure my computer to use a static IP address?
Each house has between 1 and 5 Netgear branded switches that serve the internal wired network. These switches will need to be configured with the new IP addresses. At the same time, IS&T and the FCI will also be working to update the firmware on these devices and set them up to be monitored for outages.
