Disable auto-correction of spelling in Mac OS X Lion (10.7) and Mountain Lion (10.8)

Primer

  • In Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) and 10.8 (Mountain Lion), Apple has included a feature that automatically corrects common misspellings; similar to the behavior in Apple's iOS. This guide will show you how to disable this feature.

Instructions

  1. Navigate to System Preferences.
    Menu

  2. Select Language & Text preference pane.
    System Preferences

  3. Select the tab labeled Text.
  4. Uncheck the box labeled Correct spelling automatically.
    Language & Text Preferences

  5. Close the System Preferences window. Spelling auto-correct is now turned off.
