CrashPlan for Windows - Installation

  • Accept the default choices all through the installer.
  • At first launch, use "New Accounts" and sign in with your MIT Kerberos username and password.

Step-by-step Instructions

  1. Get the CrashPlan installer on the IS&T Software Grid. (Certificates required.)

    Result: The file containing the CrashPlan installer downloads as a compressed (zipped) folder "CrashPlanPROe_Win", with an application inside named "CrashPlanPROe_Win".

  2. You must extract the contents of the Zip file. If you double-click the CrashPlanPROe_Win application, a window will ask you if you want to.

    Click Extract all.

    Result: The Extract Compressed (Zipped) Folders window appears.

  3. Click Extract.

    Result: A new folder is created, containing an application CrashPlanPROe_Win.

  4. Double-click the CrashPlanPROe_Win application.

    Result: A User Account Control window asks if you allow the program to make changes to the computer.

  5. Click Yes.

    Result: The installer opens.

  6. Click Next on the Welcome screen.

    Result: The license agreement is shown.

  7. Read the license agreement. Choose I accept the terms of the License Agreement and then click Next.

    Result: You are asked to select an installation folder.

  8. Accept the default folder and click Next.

    Result: The program is ready to install.

  9. Click Install.

    Result: CrashPlan will now install.

    Result: A confirmation screen tells you that the installation was successful.

  10. Click Finish to exit the CrashPlan installer.

    Result: The CrashPlan program will start.

  11. You will see a page that says Create your account.

    1. If this is your first time using CrashPlan for an MIT computer, choose New Account, and enter your Kerberos Username and Kerberos Password in the boxes, and click Create Account.

    2. If you have used CrashPlan on other MIT computers, choose Existing Account, and enter your Kerberos Username and Kerberos Password in the boxes, and click Sign In.
      Note: If you are asked for a server address or certificate, see this article.

      Result: After setup checks your password, your computer is registered for backup, and CrashPlan begins to back up your computer. You are done.

      • If you have many large files, first time backup may take a few days.
      • CrashPlan selects every "User" folder on your computer. It also selects some hidden folders; it is normal to see a half-dozen folders on the list, including ones that you haven't seen before.
