Configure Outlook 2010 for MIT Exchange Service

On this page:

Overview

If you do not already have Outlook 2010, you can download it from Outlook 2010 for Windows (available to current MIT students, staff, or faculty).
For instructions on how to install or upgrade to Outlook 2010, see Install or Upgrade to Microsoft Office 2010.

If you are upgrading from an earlier version of Outlook on the same computer, your account information should be automatically imported.
If you are experiencing issues logging in or using the scheduling assistant, be sure you're entering your username with a suffix of @exchange.mit.edu (For example: username@exchange.mit.edu ).

Configure Outlook 2010 to Access Your MIT Email Account

Microsoft has good instructions, which can be found here:

  • Add an e-mail account when you first start Outlook 2010
  • Note Enter your email address with a suffix of @exchange.mit.edu
While your true email address has a suffix of @mit.edu, you must use the @exchange.mit.edu suffix during Outlook setup in order for login to work.
The auto-configure process may take several minutes to finish searching for your account settings - don't be alarmed if it seems stuck for a while.

Illustrating the instructions for the MIT environment:

  1. Start Outlook.

    • New Users: If Outlook asks you to create a new profile, type in a profile name and press the OK button.
    • If want to add an account to an existing profile, you can click the File tab, then under Account Information, click Add Account

  2. Enter your account information.

    • For Email Address, use a suffix of @exchange.mit.edu (username@exchange.mit.edu).
While your true email address has a suffix of @mit.edu, you must use the @exchange.mit.edu suffix during Outlook setup in order for login to work.
    • For Password, put your Kerberos password.
      • Your password must have been created more recently than July 2010. If your password is too old, you can change it here.
    • For Retype Password, put your Kerberos/Athena password once more.
    • Make sure "Text Message (SMS)" and "Manually configure settings or additional server types" are not checked.
    • Press the Next button.

  3. The auto-configure process can take several minutes to finish searching for your account settings - don't be alarmed if it seems stuck for a while.
    • If a message appears that says you will have to restart Outlook, click OK to continue with Outlook setup. You can restart after it finishes.
    • If a window appears asking you for a username and password, re-check that your username is typed with a suffix of "@exchange.mit.edu" and re-check that you are typing your password correctly.

  4. When the search finishes the window will show show three checkmarks and a message "Your e-mail account is successfully configured."

    • Press the Finish button.

  5. Outlook will do some additional setup, preparing your files.

  6. Finished - You have now successfully configured Outlook 2010!
Note that Outlook can take several minutes and/or hours (depending on your mailbox size) to synchronize all email, calendar and contact data.
The Automatic setup described above almost always works, but if you have unusual difficulties you can try to Manually configure server settings from the initial setup window. For instructions see:
Manually Configure Outlook 2007 or 2010 for MIT Exchange Service.
