Select third-party software updates are automatically downloaded, packaged, and added to Casper for easy deployment. These packages are found under the EPM-Apps category and are available for all departments to use.
The following third-party programs are automatically updated in Casper:
- Adobe Flash Player
- Citrix Receiver
- Google Chrome
- Microsoft Excel
- Microsoft OneNote
- Microsoft Outlook
- Microsoft PowerPoint
- Microsoft Word
- Oracle Java 8
- Oracle Java 8 JDK
You can find the latest packages for these program in the JSS under the EPM-Apps group. Version numbers are included in the package name, and historical versions are kept.
If there is any other third-party software you'd like to include in automatic updates, contact email@example.com.
Every time a software update is added to Casper, an email notification will be sent to the ep-updates group. To receive these notifications, join the ep-updates group at https://groups.mit.edu/webmoira/list/ep-updates.
Once a program is updated and the notification is sent out, you can create policies to deploy it. Here's an example of how you might create a policy to update Firefox:
1. Create a new policy. Under General, set the trigger to Recurring Check-in, and the frequency to Once per computer.
2. Under the Packages section, find the latest Firefox in the EPM-App category and add it to the policy.
3. Under the Maintenance section, click Configure Maintenance and accept the default settings (Update Inventory should be checked).
4. Set the appropriate scope under the Scope section. If you'd like to update Firefox on all computers that have it installed, you can create a Smart Group like the one pictured below.
It's possible to have some machines automatically install updates as soon as they are available. If you'd like to enroll specific machines to receive automatic updates, email firstname.lastname@example.org with the serial numbers of your test machines.
We recommend automatically installing updates on a limited number of test machines, and then manually updating your policies for the rest of your department after you've had time to test them in your environment.
